David Speakman is a specialist breast and melanoma surgeon with over 15 years experience in these areas. He is also the Chief Medical Officer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and is a Senior Surgeon in both the Breast and Skin and Melanoma Units.
David is particularly interested in the minimally invasive treatment of breast cancer involving breast conserving surgery, oncoplastic techniques, sentinel node biopsy and neoadjuvant therapies. He was trained in breast reconstructive techniques as a Fellow and works closely with dedicated breast, plastic and reconstructive surgeons and is also widely experienced in benign breast disease.
David has had a long involvement with the BreastScreen Program through assessment clinics as well as being a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of BreastScreen Victoria.
A strong connection and communication between the patient and their entire treating team is vital in achieving the best outcomes for patients with cancer. David has taught the “Breaking Bad News” communication skills course for clinicians at The Royal College of Surgeons for the past ten years and taught students from both Melbourne and Monash Universities for the past 20 years.
David is an active participant in large international clinical trials in both Breast Cancer and Melanoma.
